Politics, sex, domination and now religion - apparently this was too much
for some people, and 'Blasphemous Rumours' was banned from radio
play. UK was rather touchy about religion in those days.
(I wonder if that's the reason they made it a double a-side
single...?)
'Somebody' is one of the best written songs I've ever heard on
the subject of loneliness; I used to listen to it over and over
when I was in my traumatic late teens. I still agree with the
contents of the song, although I may no longer look to it for
support and comfort the way I used to. This remix has an added heartbeat
to provide the rhythm of this otherwise very stripped down ballad; it's
pretty much only Martin singing to a soft piano melody with some sound
effects here and there.
One thing about this single that's bugging me immensely is
that on the cover it states that
Ice Machine is supposed to
be one of the live tracks, but it's not. Apparently,
it was on the vinyl 12", but they seemed to forget to
put it on the CD, while they just copied the cover off the 12".
[Grrr...] I want that track live on CD :-[
Both 'Blasphemous Rumours' and 'Somebody' was taken from the
album
Some Great Reward.
