In the '80:s and early '90:s, ex-TV-soap star (remember 'Neighbours'?) Kylie
Minogue was queen of the pop charts, and one of the most annoying, overexposed and
exploited pop artists in the known world, straight from the hit factory of
Stock-Aitken-Waterman who completely dominated the charts with all their sound-alike
artists.
I don't like Kylie Minogue. But, with this in mind, when I heard a song of hers I
really liked, I (reluctantly) had to give in and buy the darn thing. My only comfort
is that it is a good song, and that practically any singer with a decent voice
could do it well. She does it very well.
It would seem that Kylie left the hit factory producer trio; the song is written
by the mysteriuos Anderson/Seaman, of which I know nought. The song is basically
just some angelic vocals over a funky breakbeat
type drum loop and a deep bassline, with some occasional whining violin,
strings, guitar and FX. It could probably be done spookier than this, but
that is left as an excercise for the listener. For some reason, it reminds me
a bit of
Let Me Be Your Fantasy but slower, or
Portishead but poppier.
The 'Master Mix' is a good extended version, with some extra tinkly piano
intro and some added goodies; my favourite version. The 'Big Brother' mix
has a boring standard disco beat, but there's an added string part which is actually
quite good, along with heaps of stuff that are not so exciting. I tend to skip this
version. The last mix is a rather pleasant and slow sort of dub mix, quite calm and
relaxing, with little less than a deep bassline, a simple drum machine beat and some
FX. And the vocals. It's quite good.
