Comments:
I've never been particularly fond of Joel's growling voice, it sounds more like grunting than singing to me. Their ironic lyrics rarely strike me as being particularly refined as well, kind of like a sledge hammer where a better result could be obtained by a chisel. That said, this album has some quite good songs. Perhaps it's the contrast between Annelie's soft vocals and Joel's grunts that appeals to me, and the fact that these songs are (to my ears) more carefully crafted than their previous material. I especially like 'The World Is Good And Nothing Bad Ever Happens', which starts of with funky pop type drums and the soft female vocals, then in the chorus it bursts into noisy aggro male shouts (shouting the sarcastic title of the track) and dist guitars. I like the contrast. The roles are reversed in 'There's No Evil', where Joel does the verse and Annelie the more melodic chorus. 'Cannibal Hippies' is another great track, it's like a very aggressive form of synth pop, not unlike what Poupp‰e Fabrikk did with the Depeche Mode cover 'Photographic' on I Sometimes Wish I Was Famous, where Cat Rapes Dog did 'Something To Do'. Tracks 4 and 6 also have their moments.
Apart from these above mentioned tracks, I can't say I'm as fond of the rest. They're more like the CRD I don't like, constant aggro noise thunder. About as refined as punk and as interesting as speed metal. If I want noise I'll look in another direction. Other people do it in ways that suit my taste better.
