Comments:
Synthpop, ranging from the trippy early-90s-retro-70s (before the really annoying mid-90s-retro-70s wave started) softpop to Pet Shop Boys or Beloved type softpop. I bought this (dirt cheap at a pawn shop) for one track only; the Beatles cover. It's really quite close to the Beatles version, except the vocals are softer (weaker) and the drums are a funky sampled drumloop (the now infamous 'funky drummer' loop from James Brown, used by everyone and their mother). There are some other nice tracks on it as well, like 'This Can Be Real' (rather similar to the Beatles cover; soft synthblips over a sampled drumloop, this time only the second-most used drumloop ever) and 'Space'. Come to think of it, this kind of music isn't too much unlike St. Etienne or Dubstar anno 1996. Does this mean Candyflip were ahead of their time? Nah, they weren't the first. But they were OK.
(BTW, a little netsearch on 'Candyflip' enlightened me of the origins of the name; it's a slang term for mixing acid with ecstasy. I truly did not know that, but I'm really not that surprised.)
