Comments:
The first mainstream techno/dance act I can remember hearing, fusing an underground techno sound with contemporary commercial disco, and scoring a handful of hits. The "band" was actually just a Belgian producer, fronted by a few dancers/rappers/singers and people lip-syncing to other (less photogenic) people's voices. The music was, while commercial, quite dark, stomping and clearly with one foot on the underground techno scene. The lyrics were quite simple; songs about dancing, moving your feet, and turning up the beat. Pretty much the same crap as most songs in the genre.
Followers, like 2 Unlimited, commercialised the sound further and, naturally, had greater success, and for each flavour-of-the-day incarnation of this sound it changed to a more and more simplified mainstream commercial watered-down version, ending up with present-day vomit-inducing ultrasweet shiny pink plastic popsters Aqua. Where things will go from there I dare not even imagine.
