Comments:
Legendary synthpop duo with blippy sounds, catchy melodies and soulful female vocals, consisting of synth guru Vince Clarke (who had just left Depeche Mode) and singer Alison Moyet. Really good synth pop, which many have tried to copy.
The idea was that Vince, being the main songwriter for Depeche Mode, was to write songs for them even though he was no longer with the band, but DM rejected 'Only You' for being too poppy. Apparently it was, since it became one of Yazoo's biggest hits. There was also another obscure DM track called 'Ghost Of A Modern Man' (or something like that) which is said to have evolved into 'Don't Go', another major hit for Yazoo. I've heard a snippet of it, and there is a certain similarity.
Small note: Yazoo shortened their name to Yaz when releasing their records in the US due to a name conflict with the jazz/blues record label they had originally stolen the name from.
Since this not the original release, it has replaced 'I Before E Except After C' after 'Bad Connection' with the two remixes at the end. I used to think this was a good thing, but that was before I bought the reissued singles and got these songs in several versions. Nowadays I'd rather have 'I Before E Except After C', which is not really a song, but rather a sequence of cut-up voice snippets of someone (Vince, I think) reading some text, with the words rearranged into complete rubbish. More and more voices are overdubbed, making it less and less intelligable. A fun little track.
