Notes on System Models
Contents
These are the systems that NetBSD/pmax supports:
Work is currently under way for the following system:
NetBSD/pmax currently does not support the following systems:
A DECstation is a workstation that has some form of graphics display,
keyboard and mouse. A DECsystem is a server that uses a serial console.
Many models can be used in either form, usually by adding or removing
the graphics card or video memory.
DECstation family has various TURBOchannel option cards which also
work with TURBOchannel based Alpha AXP family. NetBSD/pmax currently
supports some of option cards.
Here is a list of Board, System Type,
Code and Model Names and list of
known PROM revisions with their netboot status.

The DECsystem 5900 and 5900-260 systems are rackmount versions of
the DECsystem 5000/240 and /260 systems
with a TURBOchannel Extender (TcE) module which provides total five
TURBOchannel option slots in a single system. The 1 MB Prestoserve
NVRAM card is also standard with the DECsystem 5900 and 5900-260.
The DECsystem 5500 is shipped in a BA430 enclosure, which provides
a 12-slot backplane and room for four mass storage devices. The
base system contains the following:
- A KN220-AA module set. This consists of a KN220
I/O module in slot 1 and a KN220 CPU module in
slot 2.
The CPU module contains:
- 30 MHz R3000 CPU with R3010 FPU.
- 512 kBytes of Prestoserve battery backed RAM.
The I/O module contains:
- Q22-bus interface
- SGEC Second Generation Ethernet Controller
- DSSI Digital Storage System Interconnect port
- SII-based SCSI port.
- From 1 to 4 MS220-AA 32MB memory modules, installed in
slots 3 through 7.
64MB memory modules are also available
(part number?).
The DECsystem 5400 is based on the 3500-series MAYFAIR VAXes.
The 3500-series VAXes are supported by NetBSD/vax and that port
may be able to be leveredged for a DECsystem 5400 port.
The DECsystem 5800-series is based on the VAX 6000 model 300.
The VAX 6000 model 300 is supported by NetBSD/vax and that port
may be able to be leveredged for a DECsystem 5800 port.
NetBSD/pmax supports the following TURBOchannel graphics cards:
- PMAG-A monochrome (MX)
1280x1024 @ 72 Hz
- PMAG-B 8bpp color (CX)
1024x864 @ 60 Hz
- PMAGB-B 8bpp color/grayscale 2D accelerated (HX or
SFB)
1280x1024 @ 66 Hz or 72 Hz
a variation of 1024x864 @ 72 Hz
NetBSD/pmax supports the following graphics cards with wscons kernels.
- PMAG-C 8bpp 2D, entry level (PX)
1280x1024 @ 66 Hz
- PMAG-D 8bpp 3D, entry level (PXG)
1280x1024 @ 66 Hz
- PMAG-E 24bpp 3D, mid-range (PXG+)
1280x1024 @ 66 Hz
- PMAG-F 24bbp 3D, high end (PXG+ Turbo)
1280x1024 @ 66 Hz
- PMAG-J 8bpp/24bpp direct color non-accelerated (TX)
1280x1024 @ 66 Hz
NetBSD/pmax supports the following cards:
- PMAZ-A NCR 53C94 SCSI-2 controller with SCSI-2 connector
- PMAZB-A/PMAZC-A dual channel SCSI-2 controller (TCDS)
- PMAD-A AMD LANCE 10 Mbit Ethernet with AUI connector
- DEFTA PMAF-F PDQ Fibre Optic FDDI interface
There are variations of SAS or DAS.
The wide variety of TURBOchannel option cards was manufactured for
DECstation 5000 as well as DEC3000. The following are not supported by
NetBSD/pmax in this moment.
- PMAGB-J 8bpp/24bpp direct color non-accelerated (TX)
1280x1024 @ 72 Hz
- DEFZA PMAF-A/PMAF-C FDDIcontroller 700 interface
Older FDDI interface card prior to DEFTA.
There are variations of connectors; DAS, SAS, Copper ThinWire and
Shielded Twisted Pair (STP).
This may just be a case of testing the card. If it doesn't
work, support should not be too hard to add.
- AV01B-AA DECaudio card and distribution box (LoFI)
- PMAGD-AA/PMAGD-BA 8bpp or 24bpp accelerated framebuffer
(HX+)
TURBOchannel brothers of PCI TGA. Screen resolution is selectable by
a rotary switch.
- PMTNV-A Prestoserve NVRAM
