Comments:
With the main songwriter and driving force Vince having left the band, Depeche Mode was counted out as a former band, a one hit wonder, no longer able to sustain its life. The main idea was though that Vince, now working on new projects, would still be writing songs for his old band. He presented a few songs that were rejected by the band, considering them to be too poppy. One of these rejected songs, Only You, went on to be one of the biggest hits of Vince's new duo Yazoo. This might suggest that it was, in fact, rather poppy.
This left Martin writing all the songs, making this new album a lot darker and not at all as bouncy as Speak & Spell, but with the occasional poppy Vince-like songs, like 'The Meaning Of Love' and 'A Photograph Of You'. I myself count several of these 'dark' songs as true classic Depeche Mode stuff, but that's just me. 'Nothing To Fear', for instance - a truly well-made instrumental track, with lots of nice, dark feel. Other greats are 'Shouldn't Have Done That' and 'The Sun & The Rainfall'; the former of these two also seems like Depeche Mode's first slightly 'political' song, but then again I may the only one to interpret it in this way...
