Comments:
Soundwise, this album is mostly an extension of the previous with a slight update, apart from 'Everything Counts' and 'Pipeline' which sound more modern and with some different sounds.
Lyricswise, it's more 'political' than before, with the "taking from the greedy, giving to the needy" lyrics of 'Pipeline' as a good example. There's also a bit of doomsday scenario in 'Told You So', and some environmental interest in 'The Landscape Is Changing'. To me, it seems like the quite common naive political views of many teenagers and slightly older. (Or maybe I'm just recognizing my own political views when I was in my late teens...?) However, when they grow up most of them tend to realise that the world isn't quite as simple as that... Ideals are nice, though, but far too often impossible to carry out. Not entirely surprising, Depeche Mode abandoned this lyrical concept within a few years.
