Comments:
This album is very different from Some Great Reward and all the previous albums, mainly because it's so much darker and well-produced. All the sounds are excellent, and they're in exactly the right place. The panning is superb, the reverb is brilliant. The lyrics are also excellent; no more naive politics, no flimsy light-weight stuff. This feels very true and real, at the same time both depressing and uplifting in all its darkness. This is when Depeche Mode grew up. No wonder they didn't want to put either Shake The Disease or It's Called A Heart on this album. Not that those are bad songs, but this album is so much better.
